The Whole 30 Journey

A couple years ago, a friend mentioned to my husband and I that she was doing a Whole 30. No dairy, no grains, no alcohol (I do enjoy my wine!) for 30 days? No way!! Needless to say, we were less than supportive.

Then a year goes by and my husband and I find ourselves in a bit of a rut. No progress on the fitness front, low energy, no motivation and a bit of extra, stubborn body fat. So we said what the heck and committed to our first Whole 30 (you can buy the book here). It was perfect because with me at home, I had plenty of time for food preparation and research. I had no idea that I would fall in love with this way of living. I was no longer afraid of eating fats (I previously purchased low-fat everything) and I learned how unhealthy the processed foods we’d been consuming are for us.

Now with three Whole 30’s under our belts, we have numerous benefits. My husband lost over 40 pounds and is constantly being called “skinny” by friends and family. Being a big guy, he doesn’t really like that particular label but he sure does love his newly found abs!  See his picture below….lol.

My favourite benefit from eating whole foods is the fact that I never feel bloated like I did when I was consuming all the processed foods.  I consume avocados and sweet potatoes on a daily basis and couldn’t be happier! I actually don’t think there is such a thing as too much sweet potato! Other benefits that we have experienced are increased energy and clearer skin.

I am fortunate that I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and I find myself eating Whole 30ish all the time.  My husband on the other hand is completely normal and requires frequent treats to satisfy his sugar dragon. The great part is that if we eat our whole foods on a daily basis, the cookies and pizza that he consumes occasionally don’t affect his beloved abs. Mind you, we both work out consistently and the progress that we made this past year has definitely been motivation for us to increase our fitness abilities.
