Cambridge Mill Race

Well, we did it! My husband and I participated in our first 8km race this past weekend and we absolutely loved it. I’ve got to admit that I am more of a power walker myself, mainly because we have had dogs in our house for the past 15 years. While I could train our chocolate lab to run with me, I much prefer walking with him. However, I do have this little problem where other people can’t seem to keep up with me on walks because I can’t just go for a stroll, I need to move!

My husband decided a couple years ago that he would like to start running (bad knees and all!) and has been consistent with his training. This of course motivates me to run with him on occasion and we decided to enter our first road race this spring. It was so much fun to run with other people that I’m not sure why we haven’t done this before. Pushing yourself to pass that guy in the pink tights is a wonderful motivator.

I enjoyed cross country running when I was young, but haven’t really tried it again until two years ago when we did a couple of mud runs. Our second one was a 7km course so we thought maybe we should do some training. That was the beginning, especially for my husband. At that time, he was about 30 lbs heavier so his times were not the greatest. Now that he has lost some weight after doing several Whole 30s (check out the book here!), he and I run at a similar pace and I was so proud to see him finish right behind me on Sunday at the Cambridge Mill Race. I think it’s pretty great to exercise with my hubby and we really push each other to succeed.

We are thinking that our next run could be a bit longer, maybe a 10km and hopefully we will work our way up to a half marathon. After all, I am turning 40 this year, and some new goals might just be in order. Better get running!
