Foods To Avoid When Trying To Lose Weight

This should be an easy one. Avoid junk food right? While foods like chips and baked goods are more obvious, other foods have hidden sugars and calories that a lot of us may not be aware of unless we read our labels.

High Calorie Drinks

This could be coffee, smoothies, alcohol, pop, juices and the list goes on. Don’t drink your calories! Take out restaurants will do whatever it takes to sell the product. This includes making their drinks sound healthier like a “real fruit smoothie”. That smoothie may contain over 300 calories. Specialty coffees are the same with so much added sugar that you may not realize that you are drinking the equivalent of a meal and getting none of the nutrients. Try making your own fruit smoothies or coffees at home and limit fruit juices and alcohol.

Processed Foods

This is pretty much anything that comes prepared in a package like cereals, granola bars, ready made meals or fast food. Now, I know some of these foods are pretty darn convenient and I must admit that there are some exceptions. But for the most part, READ YOUR LABELS. Check the ingredient list and be certain that you know exactly what is in the food you are about to eat. If there is a long list of ingredients that you have never heard of, think about finding a healthier option. It may be a bit more work to prepare foods yourself but it’s worth it for your health and weight loss goals.

White Bread, Pasta and Rice

Too much white bread, pasta and rice can definitely contribute to weight gain. These foods are very high in carbohydrates and have no nutritional value. Try swapping them out with whole grain breads or pastas and brown rice and watch your portion sizes.

Baked Goods and Candy

Anyone with a sweet tooth might have trouble with this one. Cutting back on those delicious cookies, whether they are homemade or store bought will help you lose weight. Others may prefer chocolate or candy when the sweet cravings hit. Try finding healthier options to substitute for your favourite sugary snack. Maybe a couple squares of dark chocolate or have some tasty fruit ready in the fridge.

Balance is the key when it comes to losing weight. Try to keep your diet well balanced with lots of protein, adequate carbs and healthy fats. Some people are able to have the odd treat here and there and still stay on track. For others, one step off of the path may lead to a complete derailment. It may take a lot of work and support to successfully lose weight but if you want it badly enough, it will be worth it. DO THE WORK! Think about some of the things you would like to do in the future, maybe run around playing with kids or grandkids, travel the world and sightsee, or maybe you have a goal to run your first race one day. All of these things will be possible if you put in the work to become your healthiest self.
